First to open

Two farms open on Saturday 14 November: Mehaffey Tree Farm in Waynesville, which then runs Thursday to Sunday each week until the trees go, and Nesbitt in Clyde, which opens on ten named days and is the only farm here with a 2026 price list. Boyd Mountain opens on Thursday 19 November and stays open Tuesday to Sunday until 13 December — the longest season on this page apart from Smoky Mountain’s, which has no dates on it.

Not posted yet

Three farms still have nothing dated for this season: Sandy Hollar, the closest one to Asheville, whose site still says last Christmas is over; Dutch Cove, which tags trees from 1 November but puts no year on it; and Smoky Mountain, which publishes its hours and a rule about the weekend before Thanksgiving but no actual dates. We have written to all three and the dates go up the day they arrive.

Mehaffey Tree Farm

Waynesville, NC · 35 min west of Asheville

The first farm in the area to open, and the only one near Asheville that publishes a price list at all. The season runs in five short blocks: an opening weekend, then Thursday to Sunday each week until the trees run out. Fraser fir from 5 to 13 ft, plus little potted ones at 3 to 4 ft that you can plant afterwards.

Worth knowingFive blocks of dates, not a continuous season: 14–15 November, then Thursday to Sunday on 19–22 and 26–29 November and 3–6 and 10–13 December. They are open on Thanksgiving Day itself. The last block runs only while the trees last, so a tall tree is safer earlier.

Before you set offThe price list on their site is still the 2025 one, and the page says the 2026 prices are due in October. We have asked. Last year a 6–7 ft tree was $115.

Nesbitt Christmas Tree Farm

Clyde, NC · 30 min west of Asheville

A Haywood County farm that does the two things almost nobody around here does: it publishes its dates with the year on them, and it publishes a price list. Ten open days spread over four weekends and Thanksgiving week, Fraser fir cut or pre-cut.

Worth knowingNesbitt is one of two farms on this page open on Thanksgiving Day itself, and the only one in Haywood County that has published a 2026 price list. If you want a big tree, the farm prices anything over 12 ft individually rather than by the ladder, so ring first rather than arriving with a number in your head.

Before you set offThe farm publishes hours against each of those dates on its own list, and they are not all the same — ring 828-550-4108 and name the day you want before you drive out to Clyde. The two ends of the price ladder are the farm’s own figures; the rungs between them are priced at the farm.

Boyd Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Waynesville, NC · 35 min west of Asheville

The one to pick if you are bringing children. Santa comes on five days, a pair of Newfoundland dogs visit on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and there is a crêpe van selling hot cider and cocoa. They cut, bale and tie the tree on for you, or lend you a saw. There are cabins on the farm if you are staying the weekend.

Worth knowingSanta is there on Saturday 21, Sunday 22, Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November only. The Newfoundland dogs come on Saturday 21 November, which is the one day to aim for if that is the draw. The cider and cocoa come from the Harvest Moon Crêpes van rather than the farm.

Before you set offThe farm lists its hours as Tuesday to Sunday, but its own calendar also shows the first Tuesday and Wednesday (17 and 18 November) as closed, so the season really starts on Thursday 19 November.

WNC Landscaping & Christmas Trees

Waynesville, NC · 35 min west of Asheville

A father-and-son landscaping business that has been growing Fraser fir in Waynesville since 1975 and sells them from two places at once: a retail lot of fresh-cut trees on Jonathan Creek Road, and a choose-and-cut field on Hemphill Road where you walk the rows and cut your own. The trees are grown pesticide-free on their own ground and cut through the season rather than all at once.

  • OpensThu 26 NovThanksgiving Day, by the farm’s own rule

Worth knowingThe two locations are not interchangeable. Fresh-cut trees are at the red barn at 2436 Jonathan Creek Road, off I-40 at Exit 20 towards Maggie Valley, with the Barn Star Events sign on it. Cutting your own happens in the field at 624 Hemphill Road, and the farm asks you to ring first, because what is standing there depends on the season and the weather. Wreaths and garland are made on site in small numbers — ring ahead and they will put one aside.

Before you set offThe farm says it opens on Thanksgiving Day and then Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 6pm, and stays open for as long as it has trees — there is no closing date, so when they are gone the season is over. That puts opening day on Thursday 26 November 2026, which is the farm’s own rule applied to this year’s calendar rather than a date it has printed. They also say the best trees go in the first week. Living trees to plant are only by special arrangement and they will talk you out of it: ring 828-226-0747 well before the season if you want one.

Chimney Pond Farm

Glenville, NC · 1 hr 15 south-west of Asheville

The farm that traded as Tom Sawyer’s Christmas Tree Farm, now Chimney Pond Farm & Lodge: a mountain estate above Lake Glenville that has grown trees since 1904 and still opens its rows for one weekend a year. Choose and cut a Fraser fir, then a hayride, s’mores, cocoa and a wreath bar, with the farm’s alpacas to visit.

Worth knowingThree days and that is the whole season, so there is no second chance the following weekend. It is a long drive from Asheville — an hour and a quarter, past Cashiers — which makes it a day out rather than an errand, and the farm is built for that: the hayride, the wreath bar and the alpacas are the point as much as the tree is.

Before you set offThe farm has changed its name. It was Tom Sawyer’s Christmas Tree Farm and is now Chimney Pond Farm & Lodge; their Facebook page still carries the old name and says so itself. Searching the old name also turns up a different and unconnected farm, Tom Sawyer’s Christmas Trees in Monetta, South Carolina — that is not this one. Prices are not published; the farm asks you to call or text 704-412-9748.

Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Waynesville, NC · 35 min west of Asheville

Fraser fir in every size, cut your own or pre-cut, baled and tied on for you, on a Hemphill Road farm that also rents a cabin year round. The season is published as a rule rather than a set of dates: the weekend before Thanksgiving through to Christmas Eve.

Before you set offThe farm publishes its hours but no dates with a year on them. What it does publish is a rule — open the weekend before Thanksgiving, through to Christmas Eve — which would put opening day on Saturday 21 November 2026. That is our arithmetic from their rule, not a date the farm has posted, and another page of the same site still says the farm is closed for the season. Their Facebook page has not been posted to since November 2025. Ring 828-400-2933 before you drive out.

Dutch Cove Christmas Trees

Canton, NC · 25 min west of Asheville

Asheville Christmas tree farm questions

Is there a Christmas tree farm in Asheville?

Not in the city itself. The closest is Sandy Hollar Farms in Leicester, twenty minutes west and still in Buncombe County, though it has not posted 2026 dates yet. The real cluster is around Waynesville, thirty-five minutes west in Haywood County, where Mehaffey, Boyd Mountain and WNC Landscaping all sell this season, with Nesbitt a few miles further on in Clyde.

When do the farms near Asheville open for 2026?

Two open first, on Saturday 14 November: Mehaffey, then only Thursday to Sunday each week, and Nesbitt in Clyde, on ten named days. Boyd Mountain opens on Thursday 19 November and runs Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays, until 13 December. WNC Landscaping opens on Thanksgiving Day itself and then Friday to Sunday while the trees last, and Chimney Pond Farm at Glenville opens for the Thanksgiving weekend only, 27 to 29 November. The remaining three have published nothing dated for 2026.

How much is a Christmas tree near Asheville?

Nesbitt in Clyde is the only farm here with a 2026 list: $100 at 6–7 ft rising to $300 at 11–12 ft, with anything over 12 ft priced individually. Mehaffey publishes a fuller ladder but the one on their site is still last season’s: $100 for 5–6 ft, $115 for 6–7 ft, $160 for 7–8 ft, rising to $400 at 12–13 ft, with little potted trees at $40. Their site says the 2026 list is due in October and we have asked for it. WNC Landscaping charged $18 a foot last season and publishes nothing this one. Boyd Mountain and Chimney Pond publish no price at all.

Which farm is best with children?

Boyd Mountain if you want the whole afternoon. Santa is there on five days — 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29 November — a pair of Newfoundland dogs visit on Saturday 21 November, and a crêpe van sells hot cider and cocoa. They cut, bale and tie the tree on for you, so nobody has to wrestle it, and there are cabins on the farm if you want to make a weekend of it. Chimney Pond Farm at Glenville packs the same thing into one weekend: a hayride, s’mores, a wreath bar, alpacas to meet and Santa on Saturday 28 November — but it is an hour and a quarter away and open on three days only.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes at Boyd Mountain, which calls itself pet-friendly, and yes at Mehaffey on a leash. The other six say nothing either way — not because they have nowhere to say it, since four of them do have a website, but because a policy nobody asks about rarely gets written down. Ring before you drive out with the dog in the car.

Why do so many of these farms have no dates?

Fewer than there were. Two of the eight still have no website — Nesbitt, which nonetheless publishes a full 2026 calendar and price list, and Dutch Cove, which sells out on tags before December. That is normal for small Haywood County farms, which sell most of their trees in three or four weekends and don’t need a site to do it. We list them with what can be verified, say plainly when something is last season’s, and ask the farm directly. Anything they send goes up the same day.

How these were checked

Each listing comes from the farm’s own website, and every card carries the date it was last read. Five of the eight farms here have posted 2026 dates, and two have no website at all — for those, the card says so and gives last season’s figures clearly labelled as last season’s, rather than passing them off as this year’s. Where a farm names its species or its sizes on a page with no year, that goes up: what a farm grows changes far more slowly than when it opens. We are asking every one of them.

Spot something that has gone stale? Say so and it gets fixed.
